Disability advocacy: People with Disabilities WA has made a submission to the federal government to influence the design of national advocacy, with an emphasis on lived experience and peer-led advocacy.
The submission on the new Individual Disability Advocacy Program can be found on our Systemic Advocacy submissions page:
Our submission points to the lack of attention in the consultation documents to the importance of advocacy led by disabled person’s organisations, where we have a long history of advocacy ‘by us, for us’.
The original disability advocacy programs were developed by disabled persons organisations, but over time, we feel the government has lost sight of the intention and importance of peer-based advocacy.
The submission is being considered by government, alongside others including disability representative organisation Disability Advocacy Network Australia – DANA, and we encourage anyone who wishes to support disability led advocacy to email systemic.advocacy@pwdwa.org to provide support for PWdWA’s submission.
