Statement from People With Disabilities WA regarding the Appointment of Mr Graeme Head OA as CEO of NDIA.
We extend our congratulations to Mr Head on his appointment as the new CEO of the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). This is a pivotal moment that comes with immense responsibility, particularly in shaping the future of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and the lives of Australians living with disabilities.
As an advocacy organisation representing the voices of people with disabilities, we recognise that the NDIS was established to empower individuals to live more fulfilling lives with choice and control over their supports. However, it is crucial to remember that we existed before the NDIS, and our needs, aspirations, and rights extend far beyond the scheme. The NDIS is not merely a system; it is a lifeline for many, and each participant is a unique individual with their own dreams and challenges.
Mr Head, your leadership offers the potential to influence positive change for those of us who rely on the NDIS. We hope that you will embrace the profound impact your decisions will have on our lives. It is essential to engage with the community, to listen actively and empathetically to our experiences, and to understand that there is more to our existence than our plans and numbers.
PWdWA would like to highlight that currently, only 12% of people with disabilities in Western Australia have access to the NDIS. As you step into your new role, we hope to see strong leadership that focuses on ensuring that the remaining 88% have their needs met. It is essential that all individuals with disabilities receive the support and resources they require to lead fulfilling lives.
We urge you to uphold the values of inclusivity and collaboration. This journey must involve us, people with disabilities, at every step. Our voices should guide the policies that affect us, ensuring we are at the centre of decision-making.
We wish you success in your new role, Mr Head, and we look forward to working together to create a future where values such as “Nothing About Us, Without Us” are not just slogans, but realities in the operational ethos of the NDIA.
Our hope is that your leadership will foster a more inclusive and empowered community for all Australians with disabilities.
